The Art of Living
"The Art of Living"
A film by Dr. Amir Har-Gil, Netanya Academic College
2006 Audience Choice Award, best film among all categories – 'Reel to Real' film festival, North Carolina, USA. - ‘The Art of Living'.

One of five nominees for the Israeli Oscar,
in the category: Best Israeli Documentary for the film "The Art Of Living",
director & producer: Amir Har-Gil.

This beautiful documentary film tells the passionate story of mature love between Shraga, aged 72 and Ulla aged 55 from the time of their first meeting five years ago until today.

It is a love story about a German Jew whose family was murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz and about an Aryan Christian whose father owned the factory which manufactured gas-containers for the gas which was used to murder Jews in Auschwitz.

This moving love story goes beyond prejudices, stigma and national feeling. The film introduces Shraga, a German Jew who fled the Nazis and Ulla, an Aryan Christian, the daughter of a prominent Nazi.

After Shraga fled the Nazis he joined the "Hagana" (Hebrew: "Defense") which was a Jewish paramilitary organization in Palestine during the British mandate of Palestine from 1920 to 1948. Shraga was severely wounded during the War of Independence in 1948, while doing his military service. As such the film also deals with a kind of reckoning that Shraga feels with the state, which he established and for which he shed his blood and as a result is slowly going blind. Despite his injuries and his developing blindness, Shraga chooses life. Between visits to hospitals he uses every moment to love and live: The art of living.

Shraga is the director's father. The film is made from his view point, the son who loves zealously, at the same time is both jealous and critical.

The love story of Ulla and Shraga raises questions about the presence of the past in the present, and addresses prejudices in Jewish German and Israeli identity.

But above all The Art of Living" is a love story.

Press reviews:

"”The Art of Living” is based on excellent raw-material and is professionally edited…well done…another great accomplishment…Dr. Har-Gil's film grasps the heart with a sensitive pinch…the discomfort will disappear only way after you step outside the cinema…"
(Amos Shavit, journalist in Zman Tel-Aviv, Tel-Aviv’s weekly newspaper).

"The German-Israeli symbiosis story is in full presence right from the start, but together with the father's anger towards the country he has built, and which at the same time he can not live without. A difficult story to uncover…touches our roots and inner self…"
(Yoram Kanyuk, One of Israel’s most appreciated novelists and recipient of numerous literary prizes).

“I watched the film twice, and I was very moved. Each of the characters separately, Ulla and Shraga, is worth making a film about, and appearing together on the screen, it is impossible not to get absorbed into their story. The film is directed with sense and sensibility. It stayed with me for days after I saw it, and I warmly recommended it to my friends.”
(Nissan Nativ, Director, and Founder of the renowned “Nissan Nativ Acting Studio”, Tel-Aviv).

“A touching love story!”
(Dana Levi, “Laisha”, prominent women’s magazine)

“Touching, interesting and important!”
(Yehudith Katzir, Israeli novelist recipient of numerous literary prizes.)

· “Amir, the director, is personally involved in the film, through which he establishes a delicate dialogue with his father. Their relationship is viewed critically, but from a caring viewpoint.”(Nacman Gilboa, “Hadaf Hayarok”, weekly newspaper)
· “True, Gessner is 18 years younger than Har-Gil who is losing his sight, but it sometimes it seems like if she was the one losing her sight, and that instead of seeing the sinking of her lover, she sees only the man she has been looking for all her life and found when he was 70 “thanks to something he possesses that attracted all the girls around him, eventually my heart as well” says Ulla and laughs somewhat embarrassed.”(Rami Rozen, “Kolbo”, Haifa weekly culture supplement)
